Note about my Reviews

Dear Authors: The reviews in this blog are only personal opinions. I have absolutely no background in literature, writing or reviewing. I am a Librarian (actually a Library Technician for those who care OR know the difference) with a love for a good story. The opinions in the reviews are ONLY my OPINIONS. I am not commenting on the writers ability since well -- I am not a writer and never will be. If you are the author of any of the books reviewed here, my opinion is just that and not a judgment against you!

Description: In a world ravaged by mutation, a teenage girl must travel into the forbidden Savage Zone to recover lost artifacts or her father’s life is forfeit.

America has been ravaged by a war that has left the eastern half of the country riddled with mutation. Many of the people there exhibit varying degrees of animal traits. Even the plantlife has gone feral.

Crossing from west to east is supposed to be forbidden, but sometimes it’s necessary. Some enter the Savage Zone to provide humanitarian relief. Sixteen-year-old Lane’s father goes there to retrieve lost artifacts—he is a Fetch. It’s a dangerous life, but rewarding—until he’s caught.

Desperate to save her father, Lane agrees to complete his latest job. That means leaving behind her life of comfort and risking life and limb—and her very DNA—in the Savage Zone. But she’s not alone. In order to complete her objective, Lane strikes a deal with handsome, roguish Rafe. In exchange for his help as a guide, Lane is supposed to sneak him back west. But though Rafe doesn’t exhibit any signs of “manimal” mutation, he’s hardly civilized . . . and he may not be trustworthy

The Good Stuff
  • Unique premise
  • Fast paced, exciting and with some nice dark humour
  • Great cover - this will sell based on the cover alone
  • Good character development - especially with Lane
  • Lane is a likeable character who you cheer for - she is strong willed and willing to fight for what is right
  • Dystopian (yup you know I love the dystopian genre - so many discussions to be had in this genre)
  • Falls gifted in setting up mood - I really felt like I could touch and see her world
  • Story hooked me in right away and I cannot wait to find out what happens next
  • Got a giggle at times about the names of the animals - sorta reminded me of a much loved episode of Kim Possible (don't judge I'm a mom)
  • Perfect for a reluctant reader
 The Not So Good Stuff
  •  Damn, this book doesn't come out till October -- do you know how long I am going to have to wait for the next book in the series.
  • Two love interests for the heroine - as an older reader, I find this irritating and cliche - but than again these books are not written for me
Favorite Quotes

"The description of me was the final insult: brown eyes, brown hair, average build. Why not just say average everything."

"If you're trying to make yourself cry, don't bother. I had my heart surgically removed when I took this job."

4.25 Dewey's

I picked this up at Book Expo America (BEA) 2013 based on the cover -- I know, I know, I am such a cover slut
