Description: With her knack for being in trouble's way, Sookie witnesses the firebombing of Merlotte's, the bar where she works. Since Sam Merlotte is now known to be two-natured, suspicion falls immediately on the anti-shifters in the area. But Sookie suspects otherwise and she and Sam work together to uncover the culprit - and the twisted motive for the attack. But her attention is divided. Though she can't 'read' vampires, Sookie knows her lover Eric Northman and his 'child' Pam well - and she realises that they are plotting to kill the vampire who is now their master. Gradually, she is drawn into the plot -which is much more complicated than she knows. Caught up in the politics of the vampire world, Sookie will learn that she is as much of a pawn as any ordinary human - and that there is a new Queen on the board

The Good Stuff
  • Tons of Sookie and her delightful way of speaking
  • Charlaine just has a way of putting you right in the story without having to explain everything that has happened, and you just follow and understand
  • Sookie has finally grown a set, without losing her pureness of heart
  • Bill has developed and is a more interesting character and he has actually grown a sense of humour
  • Bubba makes an appearance
  • Some plot points tied up
  • Find more about Sookie's family history
  • Reappearance of Mr. Cataliades, not enough of him, but at least we get some more background on him

The Not so Good Stuff
  • it was a little slow, almost like Harris is just tying up some loose ends before she finishes the series
  • I was a little disappointed with Eric in this one - not as badass and sexy sort of kinda wussy - the tv Eric was looking better to me (and I have always said I prefer book Eric over TV Eric)
  • Could have used a bit more Pam
Favorite Quotes/Passages

"Most humans were on one big island, to the fairies, and that island was adrift on a sea called I Totally Don't Care."

"It was my personal opinion that Jannalynn was not good enough for Sam. Of course, I kept that to myself. Glass houses, stones, right? I was dating a vampire whose kill list would top Jannalynn's for sure, since Eric was over a thousand years old. In one of those awful moments you have at random, I realized that everyone I'd ever dated-though, granted, that was a short list - was a killer."

"All we needed was a badass theme song playing in the background: something ominous and cool, with a lot of drums, to indicate "The Visiting Vampires and Their Human Sidekick Walk into a Trap." However, the club's music was out of synch with our little drama - "Hips Don't Lie" was not exactly badass music."

What I Learned
  • Some background history of major players
  • Eric likes Monkey Sex - sounds a little painful to me since she needed an ice pack on her privates after-wards
Who should/shouldn't read
  • Strictly for Sookie fans or fans of Charlaine Harris

I received this from Penguin in exchange for an honest review

  1. This is the latest in the series, right? I didn't even make it half way through Dead in the Family. This used to be my favorite series, but I've just found the last few books lacking in plot.

  2. I agree with Colleen. I didn't like the ninth book. Then last book made things worse. When I read the excerpt of the third chapter I got my hopes up. But after reading this book, I am definitely giving up on the Series.

  3. I finished this latest book last night after a LONG LONG anticipated wait and I was disappointed. Charlaine Harris has lost her passion for the Sookie Stackhouse novels. The book was boring, not much of interesting plots, and left lots of gaping holes. I hope the author can rekindle her love for the series and go out with a bang.

  4. i really enjoyed this one, which seems to go against popular opinion. Seeing the character development sookie has had- she is learning from her past experiences, and is wary of everyone else and their motives, that was a fun change. I also enjoyed seeing Eric and Pam being so vulnerable and scared. I am a fan of the Sookie-Eric pairing, but the drama of them having serious relationship problems was exciting. The over all plot seemed to have more going on than a lot of the other ones, although less action, and I was never bored. Can't wait for the next one!
