Note about my Reviews

Dear Authors: The reviews in this blog are only personal opinions. I have absolutely no background in literature, writing or reviewing. I am a Librarian (actually a Library Technician for those who care OR know the difference) with a love for a good story. The opinions in the reviews are ONLY my OPINIONS. I am not commenting on the writers ability since well -- I am not a writer and never will be. If you are the author of any of the books reviewed here, my opinion is just that and not a judgment against you!

Mom and Me Mondays: Scaredy Squirrel

While we were messing around with our Scaredy Squirrel puppet this weekend, we realized that we have never done a Mom and Me post on our families favorite modern picture book.  That's right the infamous Scaredy Squirrel. If you have never heard of him, shame on you -- get thee to a bookstore and buy a copy RIGHT NOW!  Even better buy a Puppet/Book Combo from select Chapters/Indigo/Coles stores and proceeds go to benefit the Indigo Love of Reading Foundation.

Description: Scaredy Squirrel never leaves his nut tree. It's way too dangerous out there. He could encounter tarantulas, green Martians or killer bees. But in his tree, every day is the same and if danger comes along, he's well-prepared. Scaredy Squirrel's emergency kit includes antibacterial soap, Band-Aids and a parachute. Day after day he watches and waits, and waits and watches, until one day his worst nightmare comes true! Scaredy suddenly finds himself out of his tree, where germs, poison ivy and sharks lurk. But as Scaredy Squirrel leaps into the unknown, he discovers something really uplifting

Jake's Review: Scaredy is really funny but he has some issues, as Mom would say.  Mom also says that Scaredy reminds her of me, but I think she is exaggerating. I think the books are more suited to younger kids like Jesse and old people like my Mom -- who is currently playing with the puppet right now. Did I also mention that she has a Scaredy Squirrel Bag and Lanyard and doesn't let Jesse touch her puppet!  I like the book because the pictures are awesome and really different. Scaredy is really funny and he can fly and he is  like me in that he is scared of lots of weird things.  But I guess if Scaredy can get over his fears, maybe I can too.
Jake's Rating: 9.5/10

Mom's Review: Scaredy Squirrel is up there with anything created by my hero Dr Seuss.  We have all of his books and adore each and everyone of them. Jake is just acting supercool by not going ga ga over Scaredy right now, but when he was 5 he made me read it to him every night.  Scaredy is so real and loveable you will find yourself out buying the rest of the series.  The stories have some wonderful coping strategies for those who are scared of the unknown and done in such a wonderful blase way. I really wish I could express more effectively how wonderful this book is, but I guess I will just let you have to see for yourself. Trust me just go buy the book, you will understand and thank Me! By the way note to self, don't let 9 year old boys play with puppet while mentioning nuts (and with Daddy encouraging him too) -- trust me! This is a MUST HAVE book for every household, Library and School Classroom!

Mom's Rating: 5 Million/10
