Note about my Reviews

Dear Authors: The reviews in this blog are only personal opinions. I have absolutely no background in literature, writing or reviewing. I am a Librarian (actually a Library Technician for those who care OR know the difference) with a love for a good story. The opinions in the reviews are ONLY my OPINIONS. I am not commenting on the writers ability since well -- I am not a writer and never will be. If you are the author of any of the books reviewed here, my opinion is just that and not a judgment against you!

Mom and Me Mondays: Scholastic Edition PLUS A CONTEST

Bone: Tall Tales
by Jeff Smith with Tom Sniegoski
Graphix (Scholastic)
ISBN: 978-0-545-14096-6
Suggested Ages: 9+ (But Jake began reading series at 7) due to some violence
The Bone Series
Boneville

Description: Long before the Bone cousins were ever lost in the uncharted desert on the outskirts of the Valley, Big Johnson Bone, the discoverer of Rolling Bone River, founded Boneville. But little is known of the mighty explorer's adventures before he started his famous trading post. So when Smiley Bone sits down with a group of young scouts to retell the legendary stories of Boneville's origin and its tough, no-nonsense founder, what they hear are tall tales in typical bone fashion--wild antics, complete with rat creatures, dragons, and a snarky little monkey! Previously published in black-and-white as Stupid-Stupid Rat-tails, this edition features new stories and full-colour art.

Jake's Review:  Since I was busy with Jesse, Jeff did the review with him in a form of questions

Who is your favorite character and why?
Smiley Bone because he has a great imagination.

Who do you like the least and why?
Phoney Bone, because he is way too greedy.

What do you like about the story?
It is a fantasy story with swords, giant rats and strange creatures what is not to like.  There is also lots of adventure and funny parts.

What level do you think the books are?
Between Grade 4 and 5

Do you understand what you are reading?
Some of the words I don't understand so I either skip them or ask you or Mom.

What don't you like about the stories?
Too much blood and violence and some of the creepy creatures scare me.

Would you recommend it to your friends?
Yes -- only if they are older than 9 though.

Would you like to read more Bone stories?
Yes, can Mom get me more?

Jake's Rating: 9/10

Mom's Review: A wonderful tale for the 9-12 set filled with Dragons, magic, interesting creatures and lots of fun humor.  Jeff and I took turns reading chapters of the first book to Jake when he was 7 and we all fell in love with the characters and the story. We were so disappointed when he wanted to start reading the rest of the series on his own. He relented and let us read the rest of the series to him.  This particular book is a great addition to the series with lots of back story for the true Bone fan.  I agree with Jake that it is a little violent for the younger set, but other than that I highly recommend it.
Mom's Rating: 9/10

Contest

I received a copy of Bone: Tall Tales from Scholastic Canada for review but since I retweeted some Scholastic tweets about a Tall Tales contest -- I actually won a second copy -- and a plush Bone.  Now I would love to give away both the book and the plush -- but my son will not part with the plush -- so you will have to be satisfied with just the book.

All you have to do is be a follower and comment on why you would like to win Tall Tales -- nothing fancy - I hate contests where I have to work too hard. If you feel like it tweet about it as well since I would love to have more followers, but you don't have to

Open to US and Canada - cuz I am all about fostering good relations between us (and the hope that you selfish Americans will send Nathan Fillion back) LOL!

Contest Ends: August 16th

  1. Hey! My son would love to read Tall Tales. He's a big fan of the Bones series and well, anything that gets him behind a book instead of in front of a screen is a good thing!

You're being followed, but you already knew that right? ;-)
